Prep Your Home for Winter
As the crisp autumn air settles in and temperatures begin to drop, it’s the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. Proper maintenance can help ensure your home stays warm, energy-efficient, and safe throughout the winter.

1. Change Furnace Filters
Your furnace will be working overtime as winter sets in, so make sure it’s running efficiently by replacing the filters. Clogged filters can restrict airflow, forcing the furnace to work harder and potentially causing breakdowns. Aim to replace filters every 1-3 months during the heating season.
2. Turn Off Outside Faucets and Drain Hoses
Freezing temperatures can cause water in outdoor pipes to expand and crack the pipes. To prevent this, turn off the water supply to outdoor faucets and drain garden hoses before storing them for the season.
3. Inspect and Add Weather Stripping
Keep the cold air out by checking the weather stripping around windows and doors. If you find any gaps, replace the stripping to ensure your home stays sealed tightly. This small upgrade can significantly reduce heating costs and increase comfort indoors.
4. Clean Dryer Vents
Clogged dryer vents not only reduce efficiency but also pose a fire risk. Take the time to clean out the vent hose and lint trap to ensure the dryer runs smoothly and safely through the winter. It also helps prevent moisture buildup that can lead to mold.
5. Check Roof and Gutters
Before the first snowfall, inspect your roof for missing shingles or signs of wear and tear. Clean out the gutters to prevent water from backing up and freezing, which could cause ice dams and leaks in your home. If you’re not comfortable climbing ladders, consider hiring a professional to do the job.
6, Check Insulation
Cold drafts can sneak in through attic spaces, garages, and basements. Check the insulation levels in these areas and add more if needed. Proper insulation will keep your home warmer and lower your heating bills during the winter months.
